Self-Breathing, 2014, 12 photographs – 35 x 50 cm, b&w photography
A series of photographic portraits entitled Self-Breathing captures important Czech artists (photographers) in the moment when they have just taken a drag on a cigarette. This moment seems to concentrate their faces on the glowing end of the cigarette levitating in front of them. The faces themselves are out of focus, creating a neutral fading background for that dominant active point. All the portraits are therefore quite similar. The identity of the people themselves is suppressed, and so the deliberately monochromatic photographs form an almost minimalist series.
