The Last Supper of the Summit

The Last Supper of the Summit, 2012
oil on canvas

It is a very small canvas depicting an event that has affected the lives of millions of people and the politics of individual states. It represents participants in the Lisbon Summit of the European Union. The picture is painted using the traditional technique of oil painting typical of 19th-century academicism, in particular chiaroscuro and smooth illusive painting, and evokes a state of “mythological timelessness”. The scene is a composed situation whose source is based on Christian iconography.

An integral part of the work is its unusual installation. The painting is fixed on an armature wire protruding from the damaged wall.

The meaning of the work therefore consists both of the methods which shall promote the importance of the displayed scene and those which undermine its representativeness.
